Our interdisciplinary research uses innovative qualitative methods, including arts-based research to foreground lived experience and address pressing mental health and wellbeing issues emerging in society. With a focus on lived experience we deliver research excellence with impact to make a positive difference for people and the planet. Mental health is one of the greatest challenges of our time and one that can immobilise young people, families and communities.
Until recently, mental health has followed a medical model, mostly associated with illness and treatment, rather than prevention and promotion. Our current research projects involve participatory action research in galvanizing lived experience activists and leaders to understand how they conceptualize experiences of mental health and the ‘system’ of care when responding to experiences of distress, neurodiversity and illness.
We see mental health collectively as including prevention, promotion, and treatment.
